Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension by Italian football authorities following an investigation into illegal betting activity.
🕵️ The Incident:
The controversy dates back to March 11th, 2024, during Udinese’s Serie A clash against Lazio. Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting in the 64th minute while his team was leading 2-1.
Authorities flagged the incident after detecting unusual betting patterns — with a surge of bets placed specifically on Okoye receiving a yellow card. The suspicious bets reportedly came from the Udine region and generated over €120,000 in winnings.
⛔ Duration of the Ban:
The ban will commence on August 18th, when Udinese face Carrarese in the Coppa Italia, and will last until October 19th. As a result, Okoye is set to miss six Serie A matches during
this period.
